Why I Started Carter Systems IT
Many Bay Area startups outgrow DIY IT long before they're ready for a full IT department. Here's why I started Carter Systems IT and how cloud-first IT support helps growing teams stay productive, secure and focused on growth.
Startup teams need technology that scales with their growth.
Technology should help startups move faster, not slow them down.
Every hour a founder spends resetting passwords, managing software licenses, troubleshooting Google Workspace issues or onboarding new employees is an hour they aren't spending growing their business.
For many startups and small businesses, technology starts out simple. But as teams grow, so do the challenges. New employees need accounts created, departing employees need access removed, SaaS applications need management and security becomes increasingly important.
That's where I saw a gap.
From Helping People to Building IT Solutions
My journey into technology didn't begin in a data center or server room. It began by helping people.
Through my volunteer work with Next Village SF, I spent years assisting older adults with everyday technology challenges. Whether it was troubleshooting devices, helping them stay connected with family or explaining technical concepts in plain language, I learned an important lesson:
Technology should empower people, not frustrate them.
Over time, I transitioned into supporting more complex environments, working with cloud platforms, user support, device management and operational technology in fast moving organizations. While the technology became more sophisticated, the underlying challenge never changed. People simply wanted systems that worked reliably so they could focus on what mattered most.
The Startup Problem I Kept Seeing
Living and working in the Bay Area, I've had the opportunity to meet founders, operators and small business owners building incredible companies.
Many shared a common challenge.
They weren't large enough to justify hiring a full time IT department, but they had already outgrown the "figure it out as we go" approach to technology.
Founders were spending valuable time managing Google Workspace accounts, troubleshooting Microsoft 365 issues, coordinating employee onboarding, handling access requests, and responding to security concerns.
These tasks may seem small individually, but collectively they create friction that slows growth.
The reality is that most startups don't need a large IT department. They need a trusted technology partner who can help them build a solid foundation and scale efficiently.
Why I Founded Carter Systems IT
I started Carter Systems IT to provide the kind of IT support I believe growing companies actually need.
Not complicated enterprise bureaucracy.
Not unnecessary software.
Not long term contracts filled with services businesses don't use.
Instead, I focus on helping startups and growing teams establish secure, scalable, cloud first IT operations.
That includes:
Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 administration
Employee onboarding and offboarding
Identity and access management
SaaS application administration
Endpoint and account security
Help desk and user support
Cloud first IT management
My goal is simple: help businesses stay secure, productive and focused on serving their customers.
